There are plenty of benefits to utilizing plexiglass in your home. The material is strong, durable, and reliable—not to mention it’s easy to cut and install. And while it has a lower price point, plexiglass windows are 10 times more impact resistant than glass and also hold heat better than its glass counterpart.
Once you’ve decided to install plexiglass, you’ll want to keep it looking its best. With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know on how to clean plexiglass.
5 Steps for Cleaning Plexiglass
1. Gather Your Supplies
Using the right supplies is key when figuring out how to clean plexiglass. You’ll want to use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the plexiglass. As for the cleaner, you can use some soapy water, or go with a product specifically made for plexiglass like Plexi-Clean or PlexiSafe. You definitely do NOT want to use ammonias, all purpose cleaners, abrasives, aromatic cleaners, and Windex. Any of these will leave behind a residue that you cannot get rid of after the fact.
2. Remove Surface Dust and Debris
Before you start cleaning, it’s important to get rid of any dust or debris on the plexiglass. While you can do this with a dry microfiber cloth, you can also use a blow dryer on a cool setting to blow off dust or debris.
3. Prepare a Cleaning Solution
When it comes to how to clean plexiglass, there’s nothing easier (and more budget-friendly) than making your own plexiglass cleaning solution. Simply mix 1 cup of water with a 1/2 tsp of dish detergent in a spray bottle
4. Apply Cleaning Solution
Spray the solution onto the plexiglass in small sections, wiping it away with a clean microfiber cloth as you go. Don’t spray down the entire plexiglass sheet at once and be sure to rinse any dust or debris off the cloth between sections.
5. Give a Final Rinse
Make your plexiglass really shine by wetting another clean microfiber cloth with warm water and wiping down the plexiglass surface.
Advanced Plexiglass Maintenance Methods
Get Rid of Scratches
In addition to cleaning your plexiglass, you’ll want to get rid of any imperfections. You can get rid of a scratch on plexiglass with toothpaste (just avoid using gel-based). Squeeze a small amount onto your finger and then gently rub the toothpaste onto the scratch in circular motions for 1-2 minutes. Once done, wipe the toothpaste away using your cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth.
Sanding with Care
Plexiglass is tough, so it can be sanded. You can do it by hand with sandpaper or use a mechanical sander. Just be sure not to press too hard on the plexiglass—use a gentle hand.
Buffing Made Easy
In addition to the toothpaste method, you can also use a special plexiglass polish to get rid of scratches. Simply apply it with a clean microfiber cloth and gently rub the plexiglass until any blemishes disappear.
