Never underestimate the power of an impulse buy. Point of purchase (POP) displays are popular for exactly that reason—they entice people to buy something they may not have otherwise, simply because it’s handy at or near checkout. Whether it’s candy at the grocery store, a bookmark at the bookstore or a car charger at the auto parts store, we’ve all done it. Consumers are 10 percent more likely to add impulse items to their purchase when shopping in-store vs. shopping online. Using POP displays near the moment of checkout is certainly an effective way to increase in-store sales.
There are several ways to take advantage of that last-minute opportunity. Display small items near the register that fit naturally with the items elsewhere in your store and talk them up at checkout. Offer trial sizes that entice customers to come back for more. Showcase “helper” items, such as leather conditioner at an auto parts store. Or even just go with a bit of whimsy or gadgetry. No matter the size of the space you have available, there’s a way to showcase a little something more using retail displays.
And don’t forget about self-checkout (if you have it)—according to one study, more than half of consumers always or usually use self-checkout to make a purchase in-store. Even when shoppers are stopping in to pick up something they’ve already purchased online, 55 percent of them will make an impulse purchase before leaving. And here’s an odd little stat for you—the global point of purchase package market was $11 billion in 2018 and growing steadily.
The sky’s the limit (or at least, the ceiling) when it comes to creating enticing POP displays. Here are a few we love.
Example 1:
This isn’t the most beautiful POP display, but we’re talking useful, not just pleasing to the eye. It’s a clean, modern design that suits the products and enables people to move through the space in a meaningful way. Clear acrylic retail displays lend themselves well to spaces that might otherwise feel cluttered. Dump bins such as those in the left foreground are an excellent way to corral and display sturdy grab-and-go items at a convenient height (just about the height of that grab-and-go hand). The covered acrylic display case in the foreground at right is a convenient way to bring more expensive or fragile items to an easily viewable height. The signage holders to either side of the shopper put important product information at eye level while providing a bit of privacy when testing the product.
Example 2:
Now this tableaux is quite beautiful. Notice how many opportunities the store owner gives shoppers to pick up “just one more thing” as they make their way to checkout without marring that lovely, painterly effect. For this type of POP display, you can use crystal clear acrylic risers, floor and wall pedestals (which also come with lighted bases), display cases and display boxes to add height, depth and organization to product arrangements without detracting from the look you’re creating. They can also provide extra protection for delicate or expensive items that you’d prefer to show your customer yourself. The custom bird wall display pedestals we did for Pacific Grove Museum would look right at home here.

Example 4:
With this stunning POP display, it’s all about that sunny burst of yellow juxtaposed against the cobalt blue of the bowl rims and the deep green of the foliage. In a smaller space, it often makes sense to group items using shelves and acrylic display risers of varying heights. It brings them to an experiential level—important for tactile items people will want to pick up and handle—while shrewdly giving the shop owner the opportunity to cross-merchandise (I’m going to assume she sells flowers and dishware, but who knows?).
Who doesn’t want to visit this gentleman’s store? From the mellow lighting to the neatly arranged products to the proprietor’s warm smile, this shop beckons you inside from the street. He’s used every inch of the space, floor to ceiling, to merchandise products at the checkout counter. Using shelving at the point of sale gives you lots of opportunities to showcase just about anything. Even just a few shelves with artfully placed acrylic display boxes lit just so—look how the shelves beneath the counter stand out—can provide a similar effect with a rich but uncluttered feel.
Example 5:
On to the haberdashery. In this shop, the owner has chosen to display items in a way that encourages people to put together outfits, not just buy a single pair of shoes or some jeans. Cross-merchandising at its finest. Here, a display box on the table behind the men is used to draw attention to smaller items people might otherwise miss. A locking lid keeps them safe from curious fingers while giving the customer the opportunity to peer inside from several angles. Acrylic countertop display cases come in all types of dimensions and can be customized, like this one (wood edges), to suit your store’s vibe.
Example 6:
And finally, candy! Who can resist when it looks this scrumptious and is sitting right there while you’re waiting in line? But this point of this choice is not the candy, it’s the opportunity to showcase like items with arresting hues or designs in a way that draws attention. A uniform lineup of clear acrylic cylinders or boxes—or even just one box or cylinder, if that’s what works—is perfect for this type of POP display. Note the way they’re lit, too; they almost look like they’re glowing from within (which they can, with the right display underlighting through the clear acrylic). And if your mind’s still on the candy, check out what we did for Dylan’s Candy Bar.
